What the car is telling you
How a car fails to start says a lot about why. Before you book, notice which of these matches:
- Nothing at all: no lights, no sound. Usually a completely dead battery or a bad connection at the terminals.
- Rapid clicking: the battery has some charge, but not enough to turn the starter. Often a weak battery or corroded cables.
- One loud click, then nothing: often a failing starter or starter relay.
- Cranks normally but won't start: the engine turns over but never fires. Think fuel (pump, filter, relay), ignition (coils, plugs) or a sensor.
- Starts, then dies: could be fuel delivery, an idle control problem, or a security system not recognizing the key.
Put what you noticed in the booking notes. It helps your mechanic bring the right parts.
Why a tow is usually unnecessary
Most no-starts come down to a handful of parts: the battery, the starter, the alternator, cables, a fuel pump or relay, or ignition parts. All of them can be tested and most can be replaced on site. Towing a car from Far North Dallas to a shop, waiting for a diagnosis, then getting a ride home costs time and money that a mobile visit avoids.
How we track it down
- Test the battery under load, and check terminals and ground cables.
- Check that the starter gets power and engages.
- For crank-no-start: check fuel pressure, spark and the engine computer's trouble codes.
- Explain what failed and what it will take, before any work.
Heat, cold and Dallas no-starts
Dallas sees no-starts year round, but they spike at both ends of the year. Summer heat wears out batteries and can cause fuel vapor problems in older cars. Then the first sharp cold front of winter finishes off batteries the heat already weakened. During the February 2021 winter storm, temperatures at DFW fell below zero and dead batteries were everywhere.
Questions
Can you jump-start my car?
Yes, but a jump only gets you going. We'd rather test why it died, so it doesn't happen again tomorrow morning.
My car clicks but won't start. Is it the battery or the starter?
Rapid clicking usually points to the battery or cables. A single loud click points more to the starter. We test both to be sure.
Can you fix a no-start in a parking garage?
Usually, yes. Most no-start repairs fit in a normal parking space.
